It witnessed a vehement resistance against the injustices of the “white man” up to the 1980s, and since then, its commitment in support of the Caribbean people has never been in doubt. The high number of intellectuals and Caribbean writers have sojourned abroad (mostly to France) basically for economic reasons. None of them was born there. This led to a situation where the francophone Caribbean writers living abroad no longer necessarily structure their works to address the plight of the Caribbean person. Contrarily, major themes treated by a good number of Caribbean francophone writers living outside the islands seek to resolve individual problems instead of bringing collective issues to the front burner. Given the fact that Caribbean francophone writers living abroad have evolved over the years in between the two different worlds, they opt for themes that are directed towards the yearnings and aspirations of two different groups of readers (the francophone Caribbean readers and those of their country of residence) with divergent views. Instead of treating themes such as economic oppression, the dignity of the black Caribbean man, the abolition of racism and the past history of the blacks in the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, the Caribbean writer attaches importance to themes that edify himself and his host country, or to themes that interest the latter. The francophone Caribbean writer’s long duration of absence from the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe gave rise to an individualistic literature on the part of the writers. While interrogating this question of individualism, our study encourages the Caribbean writers living in the Diaspora to reexamine their literary commitment to capture the realities of their land of birth. The critical approaches we have set out to use in this study are the psychological and sociological theories given that the said approaches played a major role for literary critics such as Raphaël Lucas, Léonard Sainville, Lydie Moudileno, Daniel Delas, Dahouda Kanaté just to mention a few, who have made strong statements in this regard.
Keywords.
