Abstract<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nTogolese have always wondered about the real meaning of the word \u201cAbl\u0254\u0256\u00e8\u201d used as one of the equivalents of liberty, freedom, or independence in Gengb\u00e8. Some think that the word\u2019s meaning is linked to a spirit believed to be a sea-goddess called \u201cMami Abl\u0254\u201d or \u201cAbl\u0254\u201d in short, while others hold that its meaning does not have any link with a mermaid spirit. Linguistically, the first group considers the word \u201cAbl\u0254\u0256\u00e8\u201d as an endocentric compound while the next take the word as an exocentric compound. This paper purports to show through the Gen socio-cultural and a morphosemantic analyses, the scientifically objective meaning deserved by the word \u201cAbl\u0254\u0256\u00e8\u201d whose interpretation creates confusion. The theories under which this study has been conducted are the Principle of Semantic Compositionality as developed by T. M. V. Janssen (2001, p.115) and the Cognitive Semantics as developed by L. Talmy (2000, p.100), R. W. Langacker (1991, p. xv, 589) and G. P. Lakoff (1988, p. 119) among others. The variety of Gengb\u00e8 used is from Glidji and Anfoin. Gengb\u00e8, the lingua franca of Togo, belongs to the Kwa-language family specifically, a Gbe group.<\/span>

\nLes togolais se sont toujours pr\u00e9occup\u00e9s par l\u2019origine du sens donn\u00e9 au terme \u00ab Abl\u0254\u0256\u00e8 \u00bb employ\u00e9 et compris comme l\u2019un des \u00e9quivalents de la libert\u00e9 ou l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance en\u00a0 langue guin. Certains pensent que son sens se doit \u00e0 une divinit\u00e9, une d\u00e9esse des eaux commun\u00e9ment appel\u00e9e \u00ab Mami Abl\u0254 \u00bb ou \u00ab Abl\u0254 \u00bb tout court alors que d\u2019autres consid\u00e8rent que le sens du terme n\u2019a aucun lien avec une divinit\u00e9 ou une d\u00e9esse. En d\u2019autres termes, le nom \u00ab Abl\u0254\u0256\u00e8 \u00bb est s\u00e9mantiquement transparent selon le premier groupemais opaque d\u2019apr\u00e8s le second. Cet article se propose de situer l\u2019opinion sur la signification scientifique et objective du terme \u00ab Abl\u0254\u0256\u00e8 \u00bb \u00e0 travers une analyse tenant l\u00e9g\u00e8rement en compte quelques r\u00e9alit\u00e9s culturelles des guins et une \u00e9tude morphos\u00e9mantique. Pour ce faire, nous avons adopt\u00e9 les th\u00e9ories d\u00e9nomm\u00e9es \u2018The Principle of Semantic Compositionality \u2019 et \u2018The Cognitive Semantics\u2019 respectivement d\u00e9volopp\u00e9es par T. M.V. Janssen (2001, p. 115) et L. Talmy (2000, p. 100), R.W. Langacker (1991, p. xv, 589) and G. P. Lakoff (1988, p. 119) pour ne citer que ceux-l\u00e0. La variante de la langue guin utilis\u00e9e est parl\u00e9e \u00e0 Glidji et Anfoin. Le guin est une langue Kwa de la grande famille Niger-Congo et appartenant au groupe Gbe.<\/span>
