Ex-slaves were involved in the dynamic process of the mode of self-naming or renaming. They bore surnames in recognition of their new legal and social status just like Miss Jane Brown. The fact of using more distinctive disguised names reveals the intention of creating a new identity and also a means to hide the distressing old life. The onset of a new name category is probable when a new phenomenon, a class of new referents, emerges and there is a need to individualize the members of this class.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Keywords: Equality, names, onomastics, racial identity, struggle.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">R\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">L&rsquo;article porte sur les noms choisis comme ceux que les Noirs portent toutes leurs vies apr\u00e8s la Proclamation de l&rsquo;Emancipation. Les anciens esclaves sont impliqu\u00e9s dans le processus dynamique du mode d\u2019attribution du nom ou du changement de nom. Ils portent des noms de famille en reconnaissance de leur nouveau statut juridique et social, comme Mlle Jane Brown. Le fait d&rsquo;utiliser plus de noms distinctifs et d\u00e9guis\u00e9s, r\u00e9v\u00e8le l&rsquo;intention de cr\u00e9er une nouvelle identit\u00e9 et aussi un moyen de cacher la p\u00e9nible ancienne vie.
