Abstract<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This study explores the impact of the spatial and temporal dimensions on identity formation and development in the main character in Adichie\u2019s Purple Hibiscus<\/em>. The craft of literary criticism springs from the common assumption that a literary text is a site of plurisignification. Consequently, literary praxis, from Aristotle till date, has inhered in the exploration of meanings from prose, drama and poetry texts in the belief that fiction being a mimesis of life must needs assist man to understand himself and the world he inhabits.\u00a0 Thus, characters in fiction attract special attention in literary criticism because, as Alexander Pope avers, the proper study of mankind is man. Although many studies abound on characters and characterisations in the novel, it is rare to find a study on the salubrious or deleterious influences of the spatio-temporal dimension in a work of art on identity formation in a fictive personage.\u00a0 This implies that character and identity may be coterminous but not synonymous, and the thesis of this study is that the variables of space and time substantially but subliminally contribute to the formation of a character\u2019s perception of individuality, and the self-image he\/she projects to the world.\u00a0 Further, the study hypothesises that if the variables of space and time are changed in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Purple Hibiscus<\/em>, the identity of the main character in the novel will undergo startling transformations despite his inherited genetic codes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cette \u00e9tude explore l’impact des dimensions spatiales et temporelles sur la formation et le d\u00e9veloppement de l’identit\u00e9 du personnage principal de Purple Hibiscus<\/em> d’Adichie. Le m\u00e9tier de critique litt\u00e9raire d\u00e9coule de l’hypoth\u00e8se commune selon laquelle un texte litt\u00e9raire est un lieu de plurisignification. Par cons\u00e9quent, la praxis litt\u00e9raire, d’Aristote \u00e0 ce jour, a \u00e9t\u00e9 inh\u00e9rente \u00e0 l’exploration des significations des textes en prose, th\u00e9\u00e2tre et po\u00e9sie dans la conviction que la fiction \u00e9tant une mimesis de la vie doit n\u00e9cessairement aider l’homme \u00e0 se comprendre et \u00e0 comprendre le monde qu’il habite. Ainsi, les personnages de fiction attirent une attention particuli\u00e8re dans la critique litt\u00e9raire car, comme le dit Alexander Pope, la v\u00e9ritable \u00e9tude de l’humanit\u00e9 est l’homme. Si de nombreuses \u00e9tudes sur les personnages et les caract\u00e9risations du roman abondent, il est rare de trouver une \u00e9tude sur les influences salubres ou d\u00e9l\u00e9t\u00e8res de la dimension spatio-temporelle dans une \u0153uvre d’art sur la formation identitaire d’un personnage fictif. Cela implique que le caract\u00e8re et l’identit\u00e9 peuvent \u00eatre co\u00efncidents mais pas synonymes, et la th\u00e8se de cette \u00e9tude est que les variables d’espace et de temps contribuent de mani\u00e8re substantielle mais subliminale \u00e0 la formation de la perception d’un personnage de l’individualit\u00e9 et de l’image de soi qu’il projette au monde. De plus, l’\u00e9tude \u00e9met l’hypoth\u00e8se que si les variables d’espace et de temps sont modifi\u00e9es dans Purple Hibiscus<\/em> de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, l’identit\u00e9 du personnage principal du roman subira des transformations surprenantes malgr\u00e9 ses codes g\u00e9n\u00e9tiques h\u00e9rit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n
